SIGNZ V3.x Hardware & Software

SIGNZ has been developed to work in a number of configurations:

LAN based

For LAN based implementations servicing multiple users (see below for single user sites) signz is best allocated a dedicated database server running Windows NT (or 2000). signz uses Microsoft SQL Server 7 (or 2000) for data storage and some reporting services. Smaller sites can use the MSDE database (supplied with signz) but this limits data growth and reporting tools. Medium sizes sites can use the SQL Server database supplied with Back Office Small Business Server if they have this product but this may limit reporting capabilities. Larger sites should use the full SQL Server product, giving best reporting capabilities.

Minimum recommended server configuration would be a Pentium 300 with 64MB of RAM. Disk space requirements would vary with the amount of data required – allow at least 3GB.

For multi-branch companies signz can either be installed in a single-server or multi-server configuration.  See our multi-site document for details.

User workstations can be Windows 9x, NT, 2000 or XP. Minimum recommended configuration would be a Pentium 300 with 64MB of RAM. Disk space requirements are minimal as all applications are held on the server.

800*600 SVGA screen or higher recommended. MS Office Professional (97 or 2000) should be installed if data export, user defined reports or flexible report formats are required.

signz has an integrated security system that allows a system administrator to define different levels of access for each user login.  This is defined via a security 'grid' using a User / Group structure that will be familiar to network administrators.

Web-based workstation

For staff members or clients requiring access via the Internet (or private dial-in) the only requirement would be a suitable web browser. signz uses pure HTML and does not require Active-X, Java or other components. This ensures compatibility with a wide range of workstations and should work well through all firewalls and in-house security systems.

signz’ security system can provide different levels of access and customised screens for internal and external users.

Laptop or standalone workstation

This configuration would be used by a small company or small branch office. The system uses a Microsoft MSDE database (supplied) with a series of local programs to manage data.

For laptops that are part of a larger signz implementation, signz can use either the Microsoft SQL / MSDE replication technologies (requiring a frequent dial-in connection) or SIS’ own email-based replication. Laptops can run in either ‘read-only’ configuration or can ‘read-write’, allowing full data entry capabilities.

signz can be run on either Windows 9x, NT or 2000. Minimum recommended configuration would be a Pentium 300 with 64MB of RAM. Disk space requirements would vary with the amount of data required – allow at least 1GB. 800*600 SVGA screen or higher recommended. MS Office Professional (97 or 2000) should be installed if data export, user defined reports or flexible report formats are required.
